Learn Japanese with Toranomon Language School

I often get messages from readers asking: “How can I actually learn Japanese if I’m moving to Japan?”

After trying a few different approaches myself, I wanted to share a school I feel confident about. Over the past several months, I’ve been speaking with Ryoko Marumo, the CEO of Toranomon Language School (TLS), about how her team supports international professionals.

What stood out to me is that TLS isn’t just about textbooks, their teachers are experienced in helping people who want to work and live in Japan, not just pass an exam. They also offer flexible options (beginner to advanced levels, group or private lessons, and online formats) so you can choose what works best for your schedule.

TLS even provides consultation so you can talk through your goals before deciding. It’s a helpful way to understand how their programs fit your situation.

And as a small bonus, TLS has offered readers of this newsletter get ¥10,000 off your class when you sign up with code Quinn

Salaries in Japan
What Japan Doesn’t Tell You About Pay

If you’ve ever tried to research salaries in Japan, you’ve probably run into the same issue: there’s no central database, and job ads often say “based on experience” instead of showing a number.

This lack of transparency makes it difficult for foreigners to gauge what’s fair, or to negotiate confidently.

But beneath the polite vagueness, Japan’s job market follows clear patterns. Once you understand them, you can estimate your real market value.

Industry Averages
Average Salaries by Industry (2025 Snapshot)

Here’s what professionals are earning this year, based on recruiter data, public postings, and Japan Work Report salary analysis:

Industry

Typical Range (JPY/year)

Notes

Technology

¥6.0M–¥9.0M

Engineers, PMs, and bilingual IT roles see the strongest raises.

Finance & Accounting

¥5.5M–¥8.0M

Stable pay, but slower promotions unless bilingual.

Supply Chain & Logistics

¥4.5M–¥6.5M

Strong hiring demand for operations and procurement.

Marketing & Sales

¥4.0M–¥6.5M

Foreign firms pay up to 25% more than domestic.

Hospitality & Tourism

¥3.0M–¥4.5M

Modest wages, but frequent visa sponsorship.

Why are the salaries lower?
Why Japan’s Salaries Look Lower and Why That’s Misleading

At first glance, these numbers might seem low compared to other major economies.
But Japan’s cost of living is dramatically lower: rent, healthcare, and food consume far less of your paycheck than in the West.

In other words, a ¥6.0M salary in Japan often gives you the same lifestyle comfort as earning ¥8.0M–¥9.0M in Europe or North America.

And there’s another factor: bonuses. Most full-time employees in Japan receive two major bonuses per year, often totaling 2–4 months’ extra salary. Those are usually excluded from listed annual pay.

Job Posting Tricks
How to Read Between the Lines of a Job Posting

Because Japanese job ads often omit details, here’s what to look for:

  • “年収 (Nenshū)” = total yearly income including bonuses.

  • “基本給 (Kihonkyū)” = base monthly pay only.

  • “昇給あり (Shōkyū ari)” = annual raises available.

  • “賞与あり (Shōyo ari)” = bonuses included.

If a listing only shows “monthly pay,” multiply by 16–18 months to estimate the full package.

Domestic vs. Foreign
Salary Gaps: Domestic vs. Foreign Companies

Foreign-owned (外資系 / gaishikei) companies still lead in pay. On average, they offer 15–25% higher salaries, clearer promotion paths, and more flexible work styles.
Domestic firms tend to compensate with stability, housing allowances, and stronger long-term benefits.

If you’re early in your career, gaishikei experience often accelerates your earning potential faster, especially if you plan to stay in Japan long term.

Domestic vs. Foreign
What This Means for You

Salary transparency in Japan is improving, but slowly. As a foreign professional, you have a major advantage: the ability to benchmark globally.

Before accepting an offer, check what similar roles pay abroad and compare it to Japan’s cost of living.
You may find that even a “modest” salary here stretches much further than expected.

For a quick reference, you can explore current estimates on Numbeo’s Japan Cost of Living page.
